Sohah N. Iqbal, MD(Interventional Cardiologist)answered(6/16/2012)Cardio exercise just means that you get your heart rate up and keep it up for an extended period of time (vs resistance or weight training). It is best to keep your heart rate at about 65-80% of your max predicted (220-your age) for 20-30 min. It really doesn't matter how you do it along as your are doing something you love and can keep it up. Running is great, but always watch out for joint problems. Walking on an incline gives you a great cardiovascular work-out. And my favorite is dancing. I can do that for hours and I don't even notice I am tired until I stop.
