Dr. Darria Gillespie(Emergency Medicine Doctor, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center)answered(6/27/2012)There are SO many exfoliators on the market. It's important, however, to distinguish between a CHEMICAL exfoliator (with glycolic acid or beta or alpha-hydroxy acids) from a PHYSICAL exfoliator (such as St Ives, Dermalogica, or even microdermabrasion). For many people, it comes down to what they feel works. However, I would advise people to watch out for scrubs with ground fruit pits/nuts, as these can be really irritating and actually scratch the skin and stretch pores (which is probably what you're referring to in your post, Anonymous). If you like the chemical exfoliation, Dr Dennis gross Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel is great, or Neova Smoothing Gel. For physical scrubs, you can try SkinCeuticals BioMedic Micro-Exfoliating Scrub or LaRoche Posay Physiological Ultra-Fine Scrub.
This is a fantastic answer!! Thank you so much Dr. Gillespie
Meghananswered(6/28/2012)Dr. Debra Price wrote a great rec for SkinCeuticals Blemish and Age Defense, a great chemical exfoliant for acne prone skin: http://www.chickrx.com/articles/scrubbing-bubbles
I love that product. SkinCeuticals does such a good job.
AmyWanswered(6/27/2012)Hands down, exfoliant that has changed my (skin's) life is Clean and Clear Morning Burst with glycolic acid**This is the most important ingredient—it's like a very mild, minor chemical peel every time you use it. I have combination skin as well and using this 3-4 times a week has given me the skin I thought I should have in my late 20s once the acne finally went away—it's not perfect, just more glowy. A dermatologist friend first told me about glycolic acid products and I have sworn by it ever since. Olay also has a really great facial scrub that has glycolic acid in, but Clean and Clear is a lot cheaper.

Anonymousanswered(6/27/2012)I'm 28 and have combination skin too. My facialist recommended a Neutrogena one with a pink grapefruit scent. It foams up a lot and feels gentler than the St. Ives apricot one.
