Yeast, referred to as Candida albicans, is a fungus naturally found in the vagina in small amounts. At times, this fungus can overgrow and cause an infection on the vulva or in the vagina (and/or anal area, although this is rare). Culprits include stress, a compromised immune system, birth control pills, antibiotics, diabetes and even wearing damp or tight fabric around the vaginal area.
Yeast infections generally come with an array of annoying symptoms like burning, itching, inflammation of the vagina or vulva, and a thick, whitish, cottage cheesy-looking discharge that may have an unpleasant or yeast-like odor. You may also experience a burning sensation while urinating or pain during vaginal sex.
There are plenty of over-the-counter products that can treat the infection. But, it's best to get a diagnosis from your doc to rule out the possibility that you may have a different type of infection that causes similar symptoms. And, if alongside vaginal discharge, you're experiencing nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever or chills, you should go to the hospital as this could be the sign of a more serious infection (like kidney infections or pelvic inflammatory disease).
Typically, guys don't get yeast infections. But, it's possible for them to be affected by Candida too. If by chance he does get it, his symptoms may include irritation of the penis or scrotum, or pain during urination. Although rare, Candida could also affect his anal area. Men should see their doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Even though the possibility of him contracting your yeast infection is small, it's best to not have vaginal contact with your guy until you've been diagnosed and have finished your course of treatment. If you're using medicated cream, it can cause a latex condom or other method of latex contraception to deteriorate. Not to mention, penetration can be downright painful. And having him go down on you is best left until you're better as well, since there is a possibility--although rare--that the infection (known as Thrush) can transmit to his mouth.
