I’m worried that pedicure foot baths are breeding grounds for bacteria. How can I make sure my nail salon is sanitary?

Outbreaks of serious skin infections on the legs and feet following spa pedicures have occurred from contaminated foot baths that were not properly cleaned and disinfected. In choosing a nail salon, make sure that that the foot spa is cleaned and disinfected after each use. Also your nail technician's license should be posted and your pedicurist should also wash her hands with soap and water between each client. You should also inquire about how the salon cleans their instruments. The safest nail salons steam autoclave their instruments and open the packets in your presence. In addition, you should not get a spa pedicure if you have areas of broken skin from cuts or abrasions and should not shave within 24 hours of a spa pedicure.

Is it also recommended to bring my own instruments when visiting a salon?

I think it can't hurt... but as long as the salon's instruments are properly sanitized you're fine. My dad's a podiatrist and always suggests that 1) I not waste my money on pedicures :) and 2) If I do get pedicures, I go to a salon where the water is in a tub that they empty and refill, rather than a footbath attached to a chair.
