Hana A. Feeney, MS, RD(Nutrition Coach)answered(7/19/2012)Studies show that yes, green tea extract may increase the amount weight you can lose compared to diet and exericse alone, however so would drinking green tea. The challenges with supplements are 1) you can expect to lose 1-2 pounds more using a supplement compared to diet and exericse alone, and 2) supplements of green tea extract are often mixed with caffeine and/or other stimulants that are dangerous and 3) with many supplements there's no guarantee that what the label states is in the product is actually there. Bottom line: drink 6-8 cups of green tea a day--this will boost your metabolism, even minimally, while keeping you hydrated and that will keep your mood stable and cut hunger.
Anita Mirchandani(Registered Dietitian, Certified Dietitian Nutritionist)answered(12/9/2012)I did a few papers during my MS on green tea extract in capsule form. It seemed as though the consumption of the capsule worked most effectively with a very low calorie diet (800-1000 calories) and high intensity exercise. However, there was not enough conclusive evidence to provide this as a recommendation for health care professionals. As a result, I'd say it really depends on the person and I would stick to Hana's recommendation of consuming actual green tea. Perhaps if you normally don't drink green tea, you may see positive effects with just 1-2 cups? Let us know!
Daniela Knight MS, RD, LD(Registered Dietitian)answered(10/27/2012)Just to re-iterate what Hana answered: yes, green tea can help you to lose weight. However, you would have to drink a large quantity of green tea each day to see results. Also, supplements are not well regulated and have varying amounts of green tea extract, in addition to caffeine and other additives. No one like to hear this, but the simple "pill" for weight loss is portion control and exercise.

Miranda Yanswered(7/1/2012)Yes, I've been taking green coffee extract in capsule form and really feel like it's helping my diet. Of course all diet fads are part mental—but if convincing yourself it's working helps you keep at it, that's half the battle right! I bought mine on Amazon—60 capsules for about $15—not bad!
